Fans, Lights, Power, Video and Very Slow Performance
If you are experiencing problems with:
- Loud fans
- Lights on your machine that don't seem to respond correctly or show incorrect information (battery indicators, screen backlighting)
- Power problems such as power on or the system sleeps or shuts down unexpectedly
- The system is not correctly using a second screen
- The machine is running extremely slow
Then you should reset your SMC (System Management Controller). There are different ways to do this, it depends on you machine:
How to reset the SMC on a Apple Mac Laptop with a battery that is removable
- Turn off the computer
- Disconnect the power adapter from the computer
- Remove the battery
- Press and hold down the power button for at least 5 seconds, then release.
- Put the battery back into the computer
- Reconnect the power adapter
- Turn the computer back on
How to reset the SMC on a Apple Mac Laptop with a battery that is not removable
- Turn off the computer
- Plug in the power adapter to a power source, and connect it to the Mac
- Press down the (left side) Shift, Control, and Option keys and the power button at the same time.
- Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
- Turn the computer back on
How to reset the SMC on a Apple Mac desktop computer (iMac, MacMini, MacPro)
- Turn off the computer
- Unplug the computer's power cord
- Press and hold the power button for at least 5 seconds
- Release the power button
- Attach the computers power cable
- Turn the computer back on
